Theodora Avery is the main character you play as in the book Theodora.

Most choices you make for this character influence one of the following variables: you can be on the Cynic's path ⚙️ or the Romantic's path 🏹. Starting from Season 1, Episode 11, our choices can also affect a mysterious Demonic essence 💀. These choices change the story, the interactions you have with other characters and the scenes you will be able to play.

About Theodora[]

In the book Theodora, the main character you play as moves between different timelines as she is immortal: The story starts in Paris, in 2019. You can choose a personalised first name for your character but not a surname, and the default name is Audrey Fleming. We also see her as Theodora Avery in 1914 California first, and then Belgium. In Season 2, we see her as Elena Flores in 1963 Italy.

Theodora was born into a rich family. Her parents saw her as a troublemaker and always chose her twin brother George over her; they missed her first school performance when she was seven because they attended his musical concert instead, which happened every year after that. Theodora always wanted to go to university and become a journalist, but her parents dismissed her dream and intended to marry her off to a wealthy man. After a fight, Theodora left home and took a job as a typist to make ends meet, cutting all ties with her family and aiming to prove that she can achieve success even if no one believes in her. She comes across as dedicated and strong-willed, masking her fear of being forgotten.

Theodora Avery - USA & Belgium (Season 1)

At the beginning of the story, Theodora is writing articles for "Housewife’s Secrets", a small women’s magazine. Being rather unhappy with her job, she dreams of writing about more interesting topics and finally gets the opportunity to go to Europe as a correspondent and cover the First World War. On an ocean liner she meets Lawrence Barkley who has been her idol in the world of frontline reporting. They travel to Belgium together and help young nurse Yoke Van Der Lusse fleeing from Brussels to Himworde, a small town. The Germans enter Himworde and Theodora befriends Friedrich Blumhagen, a shy German soldier who is different from his fellows and shows a lot of kindness to the people in town. While working on her articles about the people suffering under the German occupation, Theodora also visits the local hospital and gets acquainted with doctor John Roberts.

When she goes to a nearby village to investigate friendly fire, Theodora gets caught in the middle and is fatally wounded. John Roberts saves her but leaves the city before she can talk to him. Soon after the incident, Theodora starts feeling a strong energy inside her, a demonic essence, and can choose to use it or surpress it. She leaves Belgium in 1915 and returns to the US, continuing her carrier as a journalist. In 1940, she goes back to Europe to cover the Second World War. After surviving a bombing that kills Lawrence, she realizes she is immortal.

Elena Flores - Italy (Season 2)

In order to keep her immortality a secret, Theodora changes her identity and place of residence every ten years. Suffering from loneliness and despair, she pursues different writing jobs and surpresses her feelings with alcohol. In 1963, she relocates to Forramo, an Italian town on Gallini island. After hearing about Madame Rosetta’s House, a well-known but exclusive cabaret, she decides to investigate the establishment and pitches the story to the editor of the "Quotidiano di Forramo", who hires her. Theodora then accompanies businessman Antonio to a show at the House and takes advantage of a staff shortage, convincing Rosetta to give her a waitress job. She meets burlesque dancer Charlotte, dressmaker Blaine and the mysterious pianist Julian who reminds her of John. Confronting him about his strange and secretive behavior, Theodora finally learns the truth: Julian actually is John Roberts, the human form of a high-ranked demon called Almoret, representing the force of Balance. Back in 1914, he fell in love with Theodora and tried to save her when she was fatally wounded, but something went wrong and parts of his demonic energy transferred to her. She survived, becoming immortal in the process, but John couldn’t keep his human form and had to leave in order to recover.

After revealing his true nature to Theodora, John warns her not to use her demonic essence because it discloses her location to other high-ranking demons who are already looking for them. Shortly after, one of these demons finds them and burns Madame Rosetta's House down, causing Theodora, John and his friend Thomas to flee. John gives Theodora an amulet which hides his energy and ensures no demon can sense her, even if she uses her power. He also tells her about the Guardians, a group of people who are aware of the existence of demons and how to protect their souls from them. After that, the men go back into hiding and leave Theodora on a roof in London. She finds a box with essentials and keys to a temporary apartment nearby.

Audrey Fleming - France (Season 3)

In 2019, Theodora works as a freelance journalist in Paris. Over the years, she has learned to protect herself from any strong emotional distress and often meditates, always trying not to use her power. Keeping her distance from most people, she still befriends Jamie, a lawyer who does her best to break down Theodora's walls.

One day, Theodora scores an interview with a famous philantropist called Monsieur Lachance whose identity is a still a secret and meets him in his apartment. After the interview, Lachance starts praising the journalist's work and tries to make a deal for her soul with her. Finally coming out of a dark corner in his living room, he shows his face to Theodora and she realizes he looks exactly like John, but the demon doesn't seem to recognize her. He tries to detain Theodora but feels a lot of pain when touching her and she runs away. Breaking down in an alley, she meets a mysterious man named Darius who reveals himself as a member of the Guardians, the clan John mentioned in 1963. Darius tells her more about the Guardians and about his great-grandfather who created the protective amulet Theodora wears. While doing some research about demonology, the journalist also gets to know researcher Marcel.

Tormented by unknown memories and feelings, Lachance/John invites Theodora to a fundraiser which turns out to be a masquerade. After touching her on the dancefloor, John finally remembers their shared past and apologizes for what he's done. When they continue talking in his apartment, John shares that after leaving Theodora in 1963, he was punished by losing all memories of Theodora. To save Theodora from the Lord's wrath, they now need to find a way to take John's demonic power away from her and make her mortal again. Theodora turns to Darius and asks him for help, offering John's inside about demons in general, the deals and their Lord. She also secures the support of Marcel who provides important knowledge about demonology. Theodora and the group start to meet up at a secluded house in the woods where John trains her to control her demonic energy.

After gaining more knowledge about the Lord, John finally remembers what really happened in the past: The Lord was once a mere messenger for Creos, the Creator, and John was one of his Aspects. Being unhappy with the way Creos refused to share his wisdom about the universe, the messenger managed to turn the Creator's supporters against him and gained access to his essence, replacing Creos and erasing everyone's memories. Despite John regaining his memories, the Lord manages to capture Jamie and Theodora which leads to a final showdown in his castle.

  • Her height is 173 cm.

  • She also doesn't like the cold and rain.
  • Theodora is a smoker. In Season 3, Episode 2 the player can choose to continue smoking or quit it for good.
  • She knows the basics of first aid.
  • In the diamond scene with Friedrich in S1, Ep5, it is revealed she is allergic to cats. Despite this, she likes cats a lot and goes as far to pet the stray Friedrich was holding.
  • Theodora drops hints and openly expresses that people doubt her dreams, including her parents and peers. This is presumably due to the fact she is a woman and her dreams do not match the roles enforced on women in the 1910's.
  • She had a canary called Josie and loved listening to her sing. One day her brother George let Josie out of the cage when the window was open, and Josie flew away.
  • Theodora has a scar on her chin from the time George threw a broken tea cup at her when they were nine.
  • For several years, Theodora worked as a volunteer for SCI (International Civil Service), helping to develop programs for the development of poor regions of the world. She also worked as a librarian for three years.

Possible endings[]

There are three different end paths in this book, depending on how many stat points you collect during the story and if you took the most important diamond choices. In addition, Theodora can end up with her chosen LI (see their respective pages for more info), or she can stay single.

  • If they defeat the Lord, John asks Theodora to make the big decision - remain immortal or become human again and start aging.
    • If Theodora decides to stay immortal If she is in relationship with John, she and John continue working together on Creos's assignments and live their happy ever after forever. If she is not in relationship with John, she may join him more or less frequently depending on how close they are. If she is in relationship with Jamie, Darius or Marcel, they live a happy life until Theodora's partner grows old and dies, while she remains young forever. If she is single, she goes on a vacation to Malaysia.
    • If Theodora decides to become mortal again, she either spends the rest of her human life with John/Jamie/Darius/Marcel or goes on a healing vacation in Malaysia. On her death bed, she either remembers her life with her chosen S3 LI, her LI from S1 or S2 or her mother.
  • If Theodora doesn't defeat the Lord but saves her soul, she wakes up in a French hospital, realizing that she suffers from amnesia and doesn’t even remember her own name. After being released, Theodora finds out that she loves writing and tries to find a job in that area. She publishes a newspaper add looking for people who might know her and could tell her who she is. Depending on your choices, she either meets her LI (if they are still alive in 2019), or remembers them or her mother briefly while sitting on a park bench.
  • If Theodora doesn't defeat the Lord and doesn't manage to save her soul, she dies in terrible agony and her soul is doomed to eternal suffering. While being tortured by invisible forces, Theodora sees her LI or her mom and briefly remembers their time together. They tell her that she failed and will never get out.
