Abraham is a witch hunter who had formerly been close to Amabelle.
Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester
Robert Dudley is a powerful politician and favorite of Queen Elizabeth I. His sin is sloth.
Hobello
Amabelle’s shape-shifting companion, gifted to her by M. He can take the form of a toad, a crow, or a cat. Amabelle temporarily turns him into a man using her magic.
John Dee
A famous alchemist and astrologer, he is Queen Elizabeth's advisor.
Norman
Amabelle’s fellow townsman.
Tedd
Amabelle’s fellow townsman. He had always looked strangely familiar to her, as if she had already seen him somewhere before.
Stratford-upon-Avon Residents[]
William Shakespeare
A famous poet.
Aurora
Amabelle’s pupil. Amabelle is teaching her Latin and writing.
Clifford
Aurora’s father and a prosperous merchant.
Othello
Othello had recently arrived to Stratford-upon-Avon with his wife, Desdemona. He used to help Clifford, but has lately been complaining of headaches. Othello is very jealous over his wife. Some consider him mad. His sin is wrath, just like Amabelle’s.
Desdemona
Othello’s wife. She is Catholic. Some suspect her of witchcraft.
Jacob
Calls himself Iago. Othello’s friend, he’s in love with Desdemona. He loves making accusations and is constantly whispering something to Othello.
Thomasina
Aurora’s maid. Thomasina brags about having the opportunity to be taught by Amabelle. If Regina’s envy is awakened, Regina accuses Thomasina of cursing Eugénie. Thomasina is then suspended from her duties and is made to serve in Joan’s hospital.
Hospital and Kitchen Staff[]
Joan
Joan is a Puritan woman who works at the hospital at Stratford-upon-Avon. Later in the story, it is revealed that her sin is lust.
Cordelia
A woman who helps Joan at the hospital, tending to the sick. She is Lear’s daughter and is accused of committing adultery with Christopher Marlowe.
Eugénie
Joan’s assistant. She gossips a lot, especially about Desdemona. Eugénie gets cursed later in the story.
Henry
He works in Joan’s hospital, assisting with the rituals.
Rogers
The warden of Joan’s hospital. He participates in the exorcisms.
Gail
Kitchen staff member in Stratford-upon-Avon.
Hospital Patients[]
Christopher Marlowe
An actor pretending to be possessed by demons.
Lear
A sick marquess at Joan’s hospital. His mind faltered when he was betrayed by his daughters and friends. He calls himself King Lear.

A lady whose execution preceded Amabelle’s. She was sentenced because she committed adultery.
