Selena/Lilith is the main character you play as in the book Arcanum.

Selena and Lilith are her names throughout the story and you can't change them. At the beginning of the story, you can choose her appearance between four different ethnic features, thirteen hairstyles and three outfits (some cost diamonds 💎). As you progress in the game more hair and clothing options will be available for you - and sometimes makeup too.

Most choices you make for this character influence one of the following variables: High Priestess 🌙 or Emperor 💀. The plot of the story is also affected by Redemption ⛓️ (high or low Redemption can dramatically change your story and how others treat you) and Major Arcana 🎴 (the tarot cards will help you solve problems and lift the veil of the past and the future). These choices change the story, the interactions you have with other characters and the scenes you will be able to play.

About Selena/Lilith

Selena is the director of Bridge Corporation. A young, unscrupulous woman with a cold mind, who is always willing to adapt to any challenge in order to survive. She lives her life totally focused on work and is rude and indifferent to others.

In her office, she is an arrogant boss who got used to the feeling that the whole worlds owe her something. But she gets tense in crowds; she forgot what simple human communication is like when there is no bosses or subordinates. Also, outside of work, men confuse her and make her panic - she feels she is losing control around them, and Selena hates losing control.

But everything changes when, at the City Day Celebration fair, she is "cursed" by an old woman and lured into a tent called Arcanum. A mysterious tarot reader says she doesn't deserve her name and that she would have to seek redemption to get it back. After the meeting, Lilith (the “new” name of the main character) is banished to an alternate dimension where she will have to face the ghosts from her present and past.

  • Totspel (Season 1)

Lilith finds herself in a town called Totspel, in the year 1838. She is now a maid at the Hotel Valle Deliria, owned by Josephine and Liam Salisbury. In Totspel, everyone knows Lilith but she doesn't remember anyone, so they think she has amnesia. As the story progresses, you discover her past in this city and how is her relationship with the residents.

In Season 1, Episode 5 you find Liam's and Josephine’s grandfather's diary in the hotel library. In the diary, Edgar Salisbury wrote that Lilith’s grandfather was his faithful friend who died, unable to bear the shame of bankruptcy. And as Lilith was an orphan, Edgard took her under his wing. In his notes, you also discover that "Salisbury family inherit the madness on the (indecipherable word) line" and that Edgard was afraid that this madness could affect Lilith too.

During the story, you also see flashbacks of Selena's past in the real world, including her childhood. You find out that she lost her parents in an accident and had a difficult experience at the orphanage. She felt lost, confused, and angry at the entire world, so she sabotaged the meetings with potential parents. Selena wanted to be loved the same way her parents loved her. The Headmistress of the orphanage was mean to the kids and said to Selena that she could only count on herself and for her not to dare to show her weakness. This shaped her personality.

Depending on your choices in Season 1, Episode 6 Selena/Lilith reveals to Mary that she was a difficult teenager, who did everything out of spite because she believed that no one understood her. She craved for the attention of her cold father who was constantly working, and pushed her all-loving mother away because she thought she was stupid and too sensitive. She regrets that she never said she loved her mother and that she has said so many nasty things to her.

If you purchase a diamond choice in Season 1, Episode 8 Selena has a glimpse into Lilith's adolescence. It is revealed that Lilith was considered a burden and a troublemaker, no one believed her innocence and several times she was punished by Mr. Salisbury after being falsely accused. Once, her then-boyfriend Douglas persuaded Lilith to escape Totspel with him, but he had an obscure motive: he intended to sell her. Mr. Salisbury arrived in time to prevent the couple's escape just as she realized the true intentions of her lover. However, Mr. Salisbury didn't believe Lilith again. She realised that she would be judged regardless of what she did or said. So she decided to become as bad as everyone thought she was. And at the end of Season 1 you discover the role Lilith played in Totspel becoming what it is.

  • Valle Deliria & Altergrove (Season 2)

At the beginning of Season 2, the main character finds herself in a new reality, a beautiful country ruled by dryads that had the same name as Totspel's hotel: Valle Deliria. It is the year of 111th in the reign of Tar and Lilith works as a waitress at a pub called Totspel. But her life changes drastically when she discovers that she is the illegitimate daughter of the King and future queen of the realm.

During this season it shows glimpses of when Selena was 17 years old. She fell in love with Damon, an older guy she met on one of the shifts as a waitress to raise money for her studies. They started dating, but realizing that their relationship was hurting Selena, Damon decided to break up with her. He appears in this alternate reality with no real-life memories, as the King of Altergrove, the enemy kingdom of Valle Deliria. It depends on the player's choices, if the main character will feel disgust for him, indifference or try to warm up the relationship.

In Season 2, Episode 12 you find out that Selena fought with her parents before they died after a gas cylinder exploded at their home. The main character has the opportunity to talk to her mother's ghost, who says that it wasn't her fault but theirs for not checking it in time. Selena asks for forgiveness for the words spoken during the last fight they had and for everything.

In the last episode of this season, Selena/Lilith faces the consequences of her decisions and relationships in this reality. The player choices define whether the new Queen of Valle Deliria will be able to make peace or not between dryads, humans and savages.

  • Kingdom of Shadows (Season 3)

Season 3 takes place in the Kingdom of Shadows. It consists of many villages and the capital. The kingdom has mountains, rivers and lakes, and many forests. The Enchanted Forest is the biggest of them, stretching up to the hill where lives the Tarot Reader, ruler of the kingdom for twenty-seven years.

The season begins with Selena/Lilith inside a prison at Rob's old mansion on the outskirts of the kingdom. Soon the main character discovers she has been there for a few weeks and that Rob is Rumpelstiltskin in this new reality. She lost her freedom to him as payment for an unknown debt.

Rumpelstiltskin is a gambler; he always plays to get something better. So, the main character decides to make a new deal with him: if she loses, she’ll give Rob her heart (Path of High Priestess 🌙) or her life (Path of Emperor 💀). After she wins at a card game, Rob is reluctantly forced to fulfill the deal, freeing Selena/Lilith and having to take her to the Tarot Reader. Liam, who was imprisoned in a portrait at Rob's prison, asks to accompany them on this journey. Along the way they come across Mary, Bert, Damon, and other familiar faces from the other realities. Prima says that the Tarot Reader is waiting for Selena/Lilith, but that he’ll try to make this path as difficult and dangerous as possible for her.

At the end of the book you discover what are these realities, the true identity of some of the mysterious characters and the destiny of Selena/Lilith in the story based on the player's choices throughout the book. To find out about the different possible endings for the main character, read the "Possible endings" content further down on this page (contains major spoilers). Relationships

  • Love Interests:
    • Robert Steltz: Detective from the Anti-Narcotics Task Force. In all realities, he is cold and distant to Selena/Lilith at first, and you cannot tell if they are insulting or flirting with each other.
    • Liam Salisbury: He is first introduced as an aristocrat from Totspel. Only in Season 2 through a diamond scene you get a glimpse of him in the real world. In all realities, he is kind to Selena/Lilith and cares about what she thinks.
    • Mary Brown: Civil engineer. She used to work for the main character before being fired by her. In all realities, she shows a genuine interest in Selena/Lilith.
    • Bert: He is first introduced as an artist of Totspel. Only in Season 3 you can find out through a diamond scene who he is in the real world. In all realities, despite his flirtatious ways, he proves to be a devoted lover if Selena/Lilith has a close relationship with him.
    • Damon: He is part of Selena's past in real life (you can read about it in the "About" content of this page or on Damon's page). He is first introduced in Season 2 as the King of Altergrove. How Selena/Lilith treats him in all realities depends on the player's choices.
  • Other Characters:
    • Prima: When Selena/Lilith meets her in Season 1 she soon realizes that Prima knows more than she says, which makes her suspicious of her. From Season 2, the main character gets used to her presence but it's up to the player to improve their friendship (investing in their relationship can give positive consequences for your playthrough). Only at the end of Season 3 you discover this character's true identity. You can read more about Prima on her page.
    • Josephine: They meet briefly at the City Day Celebration fair, and she is rude to Selena because she thinks she is trying to cut the line. In Totspel reality, Josephine is the owner of the Hotel Valle Deliria and the boss of the main character. In Valle Deliria reality, she is the nanny of Prince Liam. In the Kingdom of Shadows reality, she is the leader of the village Juvenis. In the last episodes you discover that Josephine is Liam's aunt and that they did business with Selena.
    • Amelie: She is the secretary of the main character. Selena thinks Amelie is useless; and Amelie hates Selena because of the way she treats her. In Totspel reality, she is a mistress and treats her maid in the same mean way she was treated by Selena in the real world. In Valle Deliria reality, she is the maid of Lilith, and the player decides how the main character will treat her. In the Kingdom of Shadows reality, she is the secretary of the Tarot Reader, but only does a small appearance in the last few episodes. In the High Redemption ending, Selena will begin to treat her secretary with dignity.
    • Lola: She was a college friend of the main character in the real world. It is revealed in flashbacks that Lola's parents were friends with Damon and that she had a crush on him that was never reciprocated. Lola appears at the end of Season 2 as part of Valle Deliria's oldest family of dryads. She also makes an appearance in Season 3 as a resident of the Forgotten lands with family members well known by the main character.

Possible endings

⚠️SPOILER ALERT⚠️

You find out in the last episode that all the realities Selena/Lilith went through were happening inside her head as she struggled to survive in the real world after being accidentally hit by the drug dealer's bullet during the City Day Celebration fair, and that herself created all these trials to learn a lesson and see if she deserved to live.

You also discover that Prima, Tarot Reader, and Old Woman are the incarnations of the main character (her essences: beginning, middle, and end), and that all the other people she encountered in the parallel realities are real as she met them in the real world even if only caught a glimpse of them for a moment.

There are three main possible endings directly influenced by the amount of Redemption points and/or the amount of Major Arcana cards, and each of them also changes according to your path and love interest. For specific endings with each of the love interests read their pages.

  • Path of High Atonement ⛓️: Selena achieves redemption, gets her name back, and survives the gunshot wound. She has a flashback to her childhood and then wakes up in a hospital in the real world in present time, where she is recovering from the surgery. If you are on the High Priestess Path 🌙, Selena learns to delegate responsibilities and trust others with her work, so she takes the opportunity to travel for almost a year. If you are on the Emperor Path 💀, Selena works even harder than before but without any of the inner turmoil she had felt before, and she buys a new apartment to mark the beginning of her new life. In both paths, the main character will get the "Nothingness" card and will remember the other realities. If you have a love interest, she will go look for them, and they will react differently depending on how close their relationship is.
  • Path of Low Atonement ⛓️ with enough Major Arcana 🎴 (second chance): Selena doesn't regain her name back, so she continues to be called Lilith. You will be able to choose if she deserves a second chance or if there is no more reason for her to live. If you choose that she deserves a second chance, Lilith will be on an endless journey through the worlds, without the previous memories, just the feelings of the past. On the Path of High Priestess 🌙 you will see a scene in Valle Deliria; on the Path of Emperor 💀 you will see a scene in Totspel. What happens in this scene depends on who your love interest is. But if you chose that the main character is ready to accept death, read the description below.
  • Path of Low Atonement ⛓️ without enough Major Arcana 🎴 (or if you chose death): Selena doesn't regain her name back, so she continues to be called Lilith. Depending on your path the main character will react differently to her fate. On the Path of High Priestess 🌙 Lilith humbly accepts her death and says goodbye to all her incarnations; on the Path of Emperor 💀 she makes Prima and the Old Woman disappear, and kills the Tarot Reader. Later, in both paths, she meets Charon, and they navigate through the Styx river to the doors of the real other world. If you have a love interest, Lilith doesn't want to leave without them, so she stays in front of the doors to wait for them. If you are single, Lilith goes through the doors and then towards the light hoping to reunite with her parents.
