About Renato

Renato is a priest. He is determined, confident and sincere; and has a polite, calm tone of voice. His first appearance comes at an important moment at the end of S1, Ep7 – as he was assigned to conduct the first stage of Nova's Initiation. He uses her real name despite her being undercover.

In S1, Ep8 you discover that he was chosen by His Eminence (the Cardinal's title in the Roman Catholic Church) to help the main character in her mission, even though she doesn't know why – or why now. Renato says the situation has changed because Cardinal Barone’s duties at the Vatican require his undivided attention, so he will no longer be able to meet with Nova and chose Renato as an intermediary. So, from now on, Nova will have to report to Renato on the Incineration Alliance and the search for the Source.

During Nova's Initiation it is clear that Renato doesn't like the idea of branding her but hides this behind a veil of composure. For him, the act of branding a human being is cruel and unnecessary. But he dare not judge these customs and ends up performing the long-established rites.

If you take his diamond scene of S1, Ep11 you discover that Renato has been striving to live God’s way for as long as he can remember but that he had no idea that his faith would eventually lead him to the seminary. It took him a while to realize exactly what his calling was. But as he grew up as the son of a bishop, the Church always had a large presence in his life. He was ordained at twenty-five.

In S2, Ep2 is revealed that his father, Valerio Bernardi, worked on the same cause as Renato before he died. And after his death, Cardinal Barone called Renato to replace him. According to His Eminence, Valerio created a worthy son, and he chose Renato for respect for his father - his good friend - and because he always knew that he was very capable. Cardinal Barone tells Renato to accept this burden and that he expects him to prove that he wasn’t mistaken.

If you invest in a romantic relationship with Renato, Nova feels guilty for having these kinds of thoughts because he is a priest, and because she thinks she is unholy. The player can also choose if Renato is genuinely worried about her or just about their mission. If you choose the first, Renato finds himself thinking about how Nova is too responsible and too dedicated to the cause. He really worries about her.

If you take his diamond choice from S2, Ep8 Renato reveals to Nova that, lately, he finds himself thinking that some of the Church’s laws go against what they know about the Lord, that the Vatican keeps trying to make the world believe that Others are unworthy of His love, and he doesn’t agree with that. He confesses that he has wondered about this before, but it was convenient to convince himself that he was doing everything right. But now these thoughts keep him awake. He is scared to leave everything as it is, and scared to change anything. And he can’t even talk about this with other ministers, because they could accuse him of heresy.

In S2, Ep9 Renato helps Nova, Shen and Onix escape the Vatican and saves Nova's life by taking a bullet in her place. This puts him in a risky situation, both because he is on the verge of death and because he can no longer return to the Vatican since he protected a dangerous and wanted witch. Therefore, Vesper temporarily shelters Renato - disguised as a simple Ordinary - in the herbalist Werner's hideout, which functions as a hospital for Others.

When Nova visits him in S2, Ep11 Renato realizes that she feels guilty about him saving her, to which he promptly says that it wasn't her fault, that it was his choice. He tells Nova he has been letting distorted beliefs dictate his decisions for far too long, that he has been hiding behind his faith, and he is done with that. He wants to believe the way his heart and the Lord tell him to, not other people. He still feels that his vocation is to carry His word into the world, to be a priest; but not the kind they want to see in the Vatican. So, he realizes that he won’t be able to continue working for Cardinal Barone.

Relationships

Cardinal Barone: He is an important figure in Vatican who set up the first meeting of Renato and Nova.
