Ratan Vaish is an Indian guide assigned to the task force
Ratan is portrayed as a kind and helpful person, not only to Amala but to the rest of the task force and anyone he's a guide for. He is described as smooth and delicate as well as attentive and focused.
Since most of the people in the task force are British, Mr. Vaish assists them during their stay in India, even though he is not involved in the investigation itself. He also helps as a translator when the group splits off and Amala isn’t around.
Even though Amala has a degree in Indology and can speak Hindi, she is still very new to experiencing Indian culture. Mr. Vaish is more than willing to assist her with anything she may be unfamiliar with. For example, he is one of the people responsible for Amala being able to learn more Bengali and to practice speaking it on a daily basis.
Ratan once lived in Kliphagrami. Although his house there is now inhabitable, according to Mahavir, Ratan would still occasionally spend weeks on end in the village.
Towards the start of the story when Hayes, the British diplomat, had arrived in India, Ratan was assigned as his guide until Hayes’s disappearance.
From then on, Ratan orchestrated Amala’s arrival to India in order for her to learn the truths that had been hidden from her for so long. And once she arrived and was assigned to the task force, Ratan kept an eye on Amala.
Ratan portrays himself as a kind and helpful person not only to Amala, but to the rest of the task force and anyone he's a guide for.
He is described by others as a smooth and delicate individual, as well as attentive and focused. However (on his route), Amala always describes Ratan as a danger that draws her in and causes her to live her life “on the edge”.
As the investigation behind Diplomat Hayes’ disappearance continues, Ratan starts to express more emotions. Such as distain towards Emmett Rose when he undermines Amala’s efforts, or antagonizes her for either her gender or a possible connection that allowed Amala to be a part of the task force despite being so inexperienced. But pride in Amala as she starts to learn clues that enabled her to realize the truth about herself, India, and the situation everyone is in.
Ratan never breaks his character though by either shouting or physically getting angry, to the point that Mahavir (the local Brahmin in Kilphagrami) warns Amala that no man is able to have such inner tranquility as Ratan does.
