About Ram Doobay[]

Ram Doobay is the younger son of the Doobay family, a powerful and influential family in the Dozen. The Doobays belong to the Brahmin caste, and oversee the temple to Kali in the city. While his brother is the head of the Kali Cult and the Maharaja of the Dozen, Ram is the family Brahmin and his visions are more accurate than others, so he is associated with the goddess.

Interesting fact: In the Doobay family, the firstborn son usually performs both roles: the "Knower," spiritually connected to Mahakali, and the "Heir," who takes on the burden of leading the family. If the goddess rejects the firstborn and instead spiritually binds herself to the second son, it is considered a bad omen. A head of the Doobay family who governs without sacred wisdom and doesn’t know the truth is doomed to destroy the family or become part of tragic events. Everyone hoped that Raj’s connection would awaken over time, but when Ram was born, it became clear that the role of the "Knower" belonged to him. His gray eye, traditionally associated with those bound to the goddess, was proof of it. While Raj was always a serious and scientifically inclined boy who eagerly socialized with his peers, Ram seemed not quite of this world. He preferred silence over games, choosing to spend his time poring over books, studying the frescoes on the walls of their house and temple, or silently observing the landscapes around him. At times, he complained that he heard voices between his migraine attacks. His chosen conversation partner was often Rita-Shiva, his mentor—an unusual choice for a child. Among his peers, he only spoke freely with the sharp-tongued younger Basu. When Ram was informed of the role destined for him—to lead temple services, act as a conduit between the Dozen and Mahakali, and offer his wisdom during gatherings—he seemed neither surprised nor frightened. The young and inexperienced boy simply nodded, as if he’d known his place all along. Meanwhile, Raj’s training as the future head of the family intensified, ensuring that the Doobays and the rest of the Dozen would survive the coming misfortune. For the Dark Mother doesn’t reject the firstborn heir without reason.^[2]
