Novak is a love interest in the book And the Haze Will Take Us.

About Novak[]

Novak is a young man who appears from inside the Haze during an attack on the village.

He was only six when his mother got dragged into the Haze by a koshchei. His father, a priest, never came to terms with the loss and convinced himself that she was still there, and that they’d find her if they went in far enough. When Novak was nine, his father took his son and they entered the Haze, disappearing for eighteen years. They were presumed dead until Novak reappeared during the koshchei attack.

Not much is known about his time in the Haze as he isn't forthcoming with what happened to him there. He claims this is due to a koshchei stealing his memories. He had to walk with a blindfold in the fog so the koshcheis and mavkas couldn't control or lure him, a trick he learned from his father. Because of that, he is able to wander blind and see without his eyes.

Novak comes across as calm and cold. It's evident that he has been through a lot of pain and loneliness.

Lada: A young girl living in the village. When Novak appeares out of the fog, he says she had called for him.
Dragan: A blacksmith from the village.
Venciena: Dragan's mother. She offered to let Novak stay with her in her home on the outskirts of the village.

Trivia[]

He disappeared into the Haze eighteen years ago. The Head Priestess states that a lot of people went missing in the fog around that time. It is also known this would have been around the time Lada and Vereya were born.
He carries a bow and arrows that he made himself.
He says he got his facial scars from a bear and wears the tooth of the bear on a necklace around his neck.
