Masamune is a love interest in the book Legend of the Willow. He is a ronin, a masterless former samurai. He has a horse named Kirin.
About Masamune[]
Masamune Arai was a samurai before he becomes a ronin . His master was killed shortly after named him a samurai. As a samurai, he feel guilty for his failure to protect his mater. He also feels obliged to revenge the death of his master before his honour suicide (known as Seppuku 切腹, a ritual and code of honour as a samurai). On the road to vengeance, he met Mei (default name of the main character) and discovered that they share the same enemy and it will be mutual benefit to working together.
Ryoge mask
To find the monster who killed his master, he spent several years to learn the knowledge of Yokai. Takuma Gotou was one of the Oni he was seeking. Mei and him found out the creature who disguise as Takuma Gotou was a more horrendous creature Ryoge instead of Oni. But it was not the creature who killed his master.
Until his duties had been fulfilled, he won't give up the chance to revenge for his master. Mei and Mamasume continue the journey while carrying their own agendas.
Personality[]
Masamane is noble, decisive and strong warrior, who bound by duty and honour. He avoids killing human and killed other kinds of Yokai only fought in self-defense. He is a attentive and kind person, he requested the monks to persuade Mistress Kinuyo to bury Chiko separately from Mei's mentor Sumiko and Maoki which made Mei very grateful.

Relationships[]
- Mei - "A faithful ally in battle" (S2, EP1) and possible love interest. They shared the same enemy and agreed to work together to eliminate it.
- Kazu - In the beginning he was wary of Kazu but they grow close and become friends.
- Takao - Masamune respects him as the head of the clan.
- Shino-Odori - Initially Masamune wasn't happy with her joining the group to capital but they grow closer as time goes.
- Kirin - In the legend, Kirin is a mythological creature, follower of the law, sometimes appears at trials to save an innocent person. Masamune bought a horse in spring. When he was nearly executed by a village leader without a trial because of accused of murdering a local villager, the horse appeared and they escaped, save Masamune from an execution. Masamune decided to name this horse Kirin.

Possible endings[]
⚠️SPOILER ALERT⚠️
If Mei chooses to become empress and she's in a romantic relationship with Masamune, they will get married and Masamune becomes the Emperor.
If Mei chooses not to become empress and she's in a romantic relationship with Masamune, the pair return to Masamune’s family house and be welcomed by his parents.
If the player doesn’t take certain choices, Masamune will commit seppuku.
