Maria Theresa is a love interest in the book Vying for Versailles.
About Maria Theresa[]
Maria Theresa was born in Spain and raised in isolation, always destined to be a bride. At the beginning of the story, she is the Queen of France after her political marriage to Louis XIV, her double first cousin. The two have a son but they are not in a romantic relationship - Maria Theresa hoped the King would love her but his fidelity didn’t last long. She became friends with Louise de la Valliere, the King's current mistress, but only because Louise didn't tell her that she was having an affair with her husband. Maria Theresa had a hard time forgiving her, and when Renée meets her at court, she comes across as rather lonely, despite being married to the King for five years. Her four-year old son Louis XV is the Grand Dauphin of France, the heir apparent to the throne.
After getting closer to Renée, Maria Theresa expresses her wish to live freely but makes it clearly that she would never leave her husband. She sees her marriage to the king and raising his son as her duty. She and Renée start a secret relationship despite knowing they can never be an official couple. When the Dauphin gets kidnapped, Maria Theresa worries immensely and prays a lot, leaning on Renée for support.
After Anne dies, Louis starts to distance himself even more from his wife and treats her like a spy. Upset that the Spanish court still hasn't paid her dowry, Louis sents Maria Theresa's ladies away and declares war to Spain in 1667. She begs him to not invade the Spanish Netherlands, but her husband is eager to take what he's owed in land. Upset, Maria Theresa asks him for her own castle and lands, basically wishing to live seperately from him. She and Renée often talk about leaving court together since Renée worries if being at court will make her truly happy.

Possible endings[]
- If the couple stays together, Renée tells the King that she wants to live with the Queen. Louis agrees under the condition that Renée becomes Maria Theresa's maid of honor and will go where the Queen goes. The couple either moves to Maria Theresa's own palace or stays at court where Renée persues her career as a spy and Maria Theresa continues to filfill her duties as the Queen. Together with the Dauphin, they make their own little family. If Renée always wanted to have a child of her own, the couple will adopt a girl.
- If Renée and Maria Theresa are not together and Renée romances King Louis, she gets the opportunity to poison the Queen. If she chooses to do so, Maria Theresa dies suddenly and Renée is either caught or gets away with it.
- If Renée and Maria Theresa are not together and Renée romances King Louis but doesn't poison the Queen, or if she romances someone else, Maria Theresa gets sick a few years later and dies from a severe infection.
