Louis XIV is a love interest in the book Vying for Versailles.
About Louis XIV[]
Louis is the King of France and the ruler of the court of Versailles. You can choose his appearance between four different possible looks. Choosing the King's appearance will automatically also select his brother's Philippe's and his mother Queen Anne's looks.
Many rumors surround the King Louis XIV - love affairs, duels, even illegitimate children. Louis is very confident, knows what he wants and how to get it. He sees himself as a representative of God on Earth.
He and his younger brother Philippe are just two years appart but their mother never wanted them to be friends, afraid that they would be competitors eventually. When Louis was still a child, his cousins led the other aristocrats against him to unseat him from his throne. During these events, known as the Fronde uprising, Louis was kept prisoner in the Palais-Royale, which is why he still hates the place as an adult. After a midnight escape with his mother and brother, Louis had nightmares that it would happen again. His hatred of betrayal comes from the fear that France, if misruled, will turn against him. Louis considers the uprising his fault, although he was still a child at the time. It seems to him that he must prove his case to other European rulers and live with the memory of his father, whom he hardly knew. Because Louis constantly fears that one of his ministers gains too much power and another uprising will occur, in 1665, his valet and right-hand man Alexandre blackmails Renée to spy for them after being introduced at court.
Louis is married to Maria Theresa and has a son with her, Louis de Bourbon, also called Grand Dauphin of France (heir apparent to the throne). Because their marriage is merely a political one, he started an affair with Henrietta of England, his brother's fiancée. After they were caught and the was wedding called off, his mother Anne introduced him to Louise de la Valliere who became his next mistress and mother of his second child.
Louis and his court spend their only their summers in Versailles, and stay in Paris for the rest of the year. A year after Renée got introducted to court, the King names Alexandre Governor of Versailles, asking him to expand it and oversee the building because he wants to spend more time there.
After starting to trust Renée more and more, he confesses to her that he wants someone who he can talk to about his work, someone who has opinions on politics and the best course of action to take. When his son the Dauphin gets kidnapped in 1666, he is furious and devastated, leaning on Renée for support. When his mother Queen Anne dies, he relies on Renée once more.
Upset that the Spanish court still hasn't paid his wife's dowry, Louis sents Maria Theresa's ladies away and declares war to Spain in 1667. He plans to invade the Spanish Netherlands, wanting to take what is owed to him in land. His wife is upset by this turn of events and gets more and more jealous of Renée, demanding that she must leave court. Louis assures Renée that he'd choose her over Maria Theresa and thinks about letting his wife live in the Palais-Royale while he and Renée stay together in Versailles. As a token of his love, he has been constructing a whole perfume bath for Renée. Later, he confesses to her that he knows about France's bankrupcy and is desperately trying to hold up appearances.
After all issues surrounding the war and a poisoner at court are resolved, Louis asks Renée to stay with him and make their relationship official.
