Lori Kaplan

Lori Kaplan is the main character you play as in the book Hell and High Water.

Most choices you make for this character influence one of the following variables: Spirit of the Sea 🌊, Spirit of the Wind 💨, Pragmatism 🔗, Inspiration 💡, and Morale 🕊️. These choices change the story, the interactions you have with other characters and the scenes you will be able to play.

About Lori

Lori Kaplan is a young woman surviving in a post-apocalyptic society. Her parents Andre and Tosha Kaplan moved to Homeport in 2106, where they started a family and helped construct the Lodge. Lori learned how to sail from Nina, her godmother. Lori and her friend Chand got in a lot of trouble together; they used to go to underground ruins with Krissa, another girl originally from Homeport. Because of several raids on the coast, her parents didn’t feel like Homeport was a safe place to raise a family anymore. They moved to Juneau and opened a workshop called "Kaplan Woodworks". Lori wasn't happy there and decided to come back to Homeport on her own and against her parents‘ wishes.

Three years have passed since then and at the beginning of the story, Lori and Chand work as couriers and sail on Gitana between different ports to distribute food and other goods. After the important supply ship Aquila crashes during a storm, Lori decides to step up and move the supplies all the way up the line to Anchorage. To accomplish that, her godmother Nina gifts her Halcyon for her birthday, a big and capable boat that brought Homeport’s founders to the bay decades ago. Together with her friends, Lori embarks upon a dangerous journey.

Sean: Lori's brother. When Lori left Juneau, he stayed with his parents, but visits her in Homeport later and can join her crew.
Nina: Lori's godmother. She's almost 60 years old and owns a female dog called Spike. She taught Lori how to sail and supports her.
Mira Kaplan: Lori's great-grandmother on her dad’s side.
Sam: Lori's ex. They dated in high school until Sam humiliated Lori.

Pet Companions

Nixie the Raccoon: In Season 1, Episode 4 you can adopt the racoon that the Aquila crew found aboard their ship for 💎29. If you instead, take it to Homeport for free you will get a second chance in Season 1, Episode 7 to adopt the racoon for 💎34. The Raccoon's default name is Nixie, but you can pick a name of your choosing. The raccoon will be recurring in the story and travel aboard your ship.
Spot the Orca: In Season 1, Episode 5 you save an Orca and can wait for it to recover for 💎18. The Orca's default name is Spot, but you can pick a name of your choosing.

Trivia

Her middle name is Astrapia.
The scar on Lori's neck is not from a tragic incident.^[1] Lori tells Connor that she got it while goofing around with Sean in the kitchen - she slipped and grabbed a pot of aspic on her way down. Unfortunately, Dr. Alvarez was out of gel to treat burns at the time and her wound couldn't be treated properly. Ever since then, Lori has cared more about the supplies coming in than most.
The author revealed that she's a Gemini sun, Libra moon and Cancer rising. ^[1]
Prior to the story, Lori has not had a serious relationship before. ^[1]
