Lawrence Barkley is a love interest in the book Theodora.
About Lawrence[]
Lawrence is a famous American frontline journalist and writes for many high-profile newspapers. He has been in the middle of numberous wars, uprisings, and revolutions.
In 1914, Lawrence goes to Europe to cover the beginnings of the First World War. He and Theodora, the main character of this book, meet on an ocean liner when they both travel to France. He has been her idol for quite a while and they become friends pretty quickly, continuing their journey to Belgium together. Lawrence and Theodora help Yoke, a young nurse, to get back to her family in Himworde, and decide to stay and cover the war from there.
After getting closer to Theodora, Lawrence confides in her about his difficult backstory. He was left on the steps of a boys‘ orphanage when he was about six months old, with a note stating his name and asking the staff to take care of him. Growing up in the orphanage, his goal was to become the best of the best, so that all the newspapers would be full of his name and his parents would regret abandoning him. He dreamt of them finding him and apologizing for leaving him like that. After getting more and more famous, Lawrence's father really did reach out and begged for his forgiveness, telling him a sob story about not having enough money to feed him and hoping that he would have a better life that way. When Lawrence asked about his mother, he was told that she passed away shortly after his parents gave him up. The journalist remained skeptical and after some research, he found out the truth: His parents lived quite well until his father lost his job and started drinking. When his wife gave birth to Lawrence, he decided to give his son up and threatened his wife who was against it. She finally agreed but secretly planned to save money and run away with Lawrence as soon as she'd get the chance; but she drowned under mysterious circumstances before ever getting that chance. Knowing what really happened, Lawrence sent his father away and never looked back.
Lawrence is a gentleman with a mischievous glint in his eyes. Writing about uprisings and revolutions has always been his purpose in life, at least until he met Theodora and makes more friends in Himworde. Spending time with them makes him realize that there's more to life. Talking about their future after the war, Lawrence says that he wants to switch for a while and try his hand at literature - a plan he actually puts into action. If he and Theodora start dating, he's shown to be more vulnerable and pretty romantic.
If you romance Lawrence, in April 1915 Theodora suggests that they leave Belgium and move to the US. They get married after 2,5 years and live a happy life together. In 1940, they go back to France to cover the Second World War. The bus they travel in gets heavily bombed and Theoora has to watch Lawrence die which leaves her devastated.
If you don't romance Lawrence, he stays in Himworde and says goodbye to Theodora (and Theodora's partner, if she has one). They keep in touch via letters and meet briefly in 1932 when he passes through her city advertising his book. In 1940, both of them go back to France to cover the Second World War. While traveling, Lawrence tells her about his failed marriage. Immediately after that, their bus gets heavily bombed and Theodora has to watch Lawrence die.
