Friedrich is a love interest in the book Theodora.
About Friedrich[]
Friedrich is a German soldier stationed in Himworde, Belgium, in 1914. He is part of the Landsturm - a reserve force; militia or military units composed of troops of inferior quality.
When he first meets the journalist Theodora, the main character of this book, he's trying to help little Belgian girl who he thinks is lost. Theodora first assumes he's up to something bad because of his uniform, but changes her mind after talking to him. After a while, the both of them meet again in the local tavern where Theodora has a chance to learn a bit more about Friedrich. He reveals that he came alone in order to not cause any trouble; he even chose to sit at the farthest table which shows Theodora that he's very considerate, avoids conflict and doesn't want to make anyone uncomfortable. During the convesation, he displays his caring side by asking about the little Belgian girl and expressing disapproval towards other soldiers' brutal and heartless actions. He and Theodora become friends and she introduces him to the journalist Lawrence, the doctor John and the nurse Yoke.
After getting closer to Theodora, Friedrich confides in her about his difficult backstory. His father Otto, a major in the army, tried to prepare his son for the military by belittling and abusing him. He used to lock him up in the attic without any light where Friedrich had to listen while Otto beat his wife. This childhood trauma lead to Friedrich developing a stutter.
Friedrich is rather reserved and comes across as self-conscious, but constantly shows his kindness. Despite his seemingly soft personality, he demonstrates his bravery and strength of character several times in the story.
If you romance Friedrich, in April 1915 Theodora suggests that they leave Belgium and move to the US. With the help of Lawrence, Friedrich gets new documents and a new identity as an American journalist called Ted Newland. He and Theodora get married a year after going back to the States and Friedrich manages to build a carrer as a successful musician and singer. They live happily until Friedrich dies of acute myeloid leukemia on April 24, 1938.
If you don't romance Friedrich and set him up with Kurt, both men flee to the Netherlands after getting new documents thanks to Lawrence and Theodora. Friedrich manages to build a carrer as a successful musician and singer. He dies in April 1938 of acute myeloid leukemia.
If you don't romance Friedrich and he stays single, Theodora hears from him in 1918 when he writes to her that he might be transferred. She later finds out that Friedrich died in the Second Battle of the Marne.
