Frances is the main female love interest in Moonborn. She is introduced only at the end Season 3, hence she has significantly less screen time and romantic interactions with Mia, the main character you play as, compared to the male love interests, however her route is interesting and worth playing.
About Frances
Mia meets Frances in Season 3, Episode 8, while she is in Bordeaux looking for clues to fight her main antagonist's plan. Frances had been waiting for over 20 years for someone to get in touch with her regarding the Moonborn prophecy, as she was instructed to do so by Luka Mero, the vampire who turned her. Frances will join Mia in her quest for answers, will sell her Bordeaux apartment and move with her to the United States.
Pursuing a relationship with Frances will only be possible if Mia is not already in a relationship with Max or Victor, as romantic options for her won't be available in that case.
Mia and Frances' relationship throughout the book is close. Whether they become lovers or remain just friends, Frances is a helpful and generous ally to Mia, even agreeing to look after Mia's best friend Trisha when she is threatened by vampire Daryl.
Frances has three possible endings according to your choices: she can survive while not being in a relationship with Mia, she can survive and be in a relationship with Mia, or she can die during the final battle if you did not spare Howard's life in Season 2, Episode 7, as Howard will save Frances' life when she is attacked.
Biography
Frances became a vampire 20 years before meeting Mia. Luka Mero, the vampire who turned her, while on his deathbed, left her with four boxes to send to different addresses, and with the duty to help whoever would come asking about them. Mia is the first person who ever got in touch with her about this.
Luka was mysteriously murdered the same night she met him and he turned her, however Frances could not help him because she was not fully converted yet, so she was weak and not completely conscious and she only has a fragmented recollection of the events. Regardless, Frances feels that she owes her life to Luka and will do anything and everything to help Mia, since that was Luka's final wish. She also wants to avenge Luka's death.
Until meeting Mia, Frances has lived a mostly solitary life in Bordeaux, without mixing with the local vampire community and trying not to make any unnecessary acquaintances. She tells Mia that there aren't many werewolves or vampires there, and that was one of the reasons why she chose to settle there, as she was keen on keeping a low profile while waiting for the person who would look for more information about the boxes.
Depending on your choices, Frances can save Trisha's - Mia's best friend' - life in Season 5, Episode 8, or fail to do so. If she doesn't save her, she is devastated, as she knows how much Trisha meant to Mia, and murders her vampire killer Daryl anyway in retaliation. If she saves Trisha, she will keep her in her hotel room waiting for Mia to come back from Prague, as Trisha is too scared to be home alone.
We learn more about Frances' past in a diamond scene in Season 3, Episode 9. Frances tells Mia that she was born in Paris, where her mother had immigrated from Somalia. Their life was hard and her mother died when Frances was six. Since she did not have any other relatives, she was sent to an orphanage, which was actually a really nice place with lots of great people who taught her a lot and supported her. After completing her studies, Frances joined the Red Cross, then travelled to Albania, Congo, and Iraq. Frances is traumatized by the memories of the war there, especially since she was held captive for one and a half months in Iraq. Upon her return, she found out she was HIV positive. She gave up to desperation, started doing drugs, and fell into a spiral of self-destruction. Then she met Luka, who offered to turn her in exchange for his last wish to be fulfilled.
Frances has had enough money to survive those years, but is not a wealthy person as she is not currently working. If her and Mia are in a romantic relationship at the end of the book, we learn that she has started working at a hospital lab conducting tests and she likes being a part of society and doing things that might help others.
Frances is generally a very reserved person, but her interactions with Mia are warmer if the two are together. If Frances is in a romantic relationship with Mia, she will tell her that she finds her uncommon and impossibly attractive, like an electrical discharge. Mia asks her if she means she is deadly, but Frances laughs and says that too, but most of all Mia makes her feel alive, breaking her out of her routine and motivating her to act.
Frances' pet name for Mia is 'my swallow', because - as she explains in a diamond scene in Season 4, Episode 7 - swallows are birds considered by some legends to be a good omen, keepers of peace, and by other legends as birds that bring the gift of fire to people. Frances thinks that Mia is very contradictory, just like the swallow bird, and she has become her good omen. She later tells Mia that she is phenomenal, and it's not because she is the Moonborn but because she is strong, optimistic, funny, brave, cute and just the best.
