Christian de Clare, Lord Hertfordshire, is the current Governor General of Bengal. He was appointed in 1895 after the death of the previous Governor, and has learned to be a cunning ruler in order to maintain control in Bengal. After an accidental meeting in 1895, he meets Deviya again when he is looking to invest in the Sharma family mines. Despite the outcome of the massacre in the Himalayas, he again sets his sights on marrying a bride from the Dozen, this time specifically Deviya.
Christian is one of three children of the Earl of Hertfordshire. His mother died in 1885, and his father still works in politics. Christian's older brother Charles is the heir to the estate, but lives in London and eschews climbing the political ladder. He has a sister, Catherine, that is in boarding school and the two are very close. At some point in Christian's past he was engaged to a young lady, and had a falling out with a former friend and political rival the Lord Swinford.
