About Chloe[]
Chloe is a freshman at Kearney University.
Jaynie and Chloe first meet at their orientation and become friends pretty quickly. Chloe is rather mysterious and seems to be nervous around people, which is attributed to her being autistic. In addition, she comes across as very radiant, charismatic and clever. Chloe already has sophomore credits but chose to enter as a freshman, wanting to study journalism. Being at Kearney is important to her because she always wanted to work with certain professors, making sure to start her own career and be independent from her father.
After a while, Jaynie notices that Chloe often attends parties and events in disguise, giving the impression that she is spying on someone or investigating something. When they get closer, Chloe confesses that she's in witness protection and gathering information because she plans to testify against her father, Ronan Trayvis. He owns Energexis, an energy company that also deals with oil. Ronan loves his daughter and always spoiled her, but he has never let sentimentality get in the way of business and can be quite ruthless. When she was only 12 years old, Chloe heard her father talking badly about an undercover journalist and realized that her father had something to hide. A few months ago, Chloe overheard him talking about taking someone out who didn’t want to sell his land to the company. Horrified, she left home and entered Kearney under an alias, determined to find out which people from her father's social circle are in cahoots with him and exposing them all.
Chloe's mother has never been able to stand up to her father. It is implied that she has a foreign background and doesn’t speak English very well. Chloe used to feel embarrassed of her because she looked different than other mothers, leading to ignorant people confusing her with a nanny. After growing up, Chloe changed her mind and loves her mother dearly, wishing she could contact her and explain why she left home without saying goodbye.
As the story progresses, Jaynie and Chloe start getting closer and become intimate. Jaynie confesses that she's an informant for the FBI, trying to find drug dealers in exchange for her brother Carter's freedom from prosecution. After hearing about the FBI agent's behavior, Chloe doubts that they really are who they claim to be, and promises to help Jaynie with her investigations. Not long after, she finds out that the alleged FBI agents are fixers, and Jaynie realizes that they were hired by the parents of another Kearney student to place her in Rosewood House and made her spie for them under duress.
