Boris Romanov is a casual love interest in the book Heaven's Secret: Requiem.

About Boris Romanov

Boris is a young aristocrat, hunter, and owner of the estate on Rotkov, in which Dmitry’s squad reside at the beginning of the story. However, he tries to avoid the place and he barely lived there. Although he is out of touch with the affairs of the estate, he preserved it well, because it is his legacy.

The hunter appears not to be used to controlling his impulses. He almost shoots Lane (main character) by mistake in S1, Ep4, because he was tracking a brown hare in the forest and simply reacted to seeing movement. Although this seems like their first meeting, you discover that Boris was the mysterious guy who saved Lane from an artisan earlier in the episode.

As the story progresses you discover that Boris's grandfather, Romanov, is the founder of Rotkov. His ancestor was a wealthy merchant whose passion was sculpting. He constructed an estate on a snowy wasteland in Siberia and a village was built nearby to serve it. The reason Romanov chose that place was because he felt that there was something inexplicable in these lands. In addition, the local people believed that it was inhabited by diabolical forces.

His grandfather had a long life and was a passionate person, a seeker. At a very young age, he was part of a certain Order from whom he stole the Book of the Apocalypse. After the theft, Romanov ran far away to the wilderness of Siberia, where he built his estate with a substantial capital he inherited. Then, he began to carry out rituals in which innocent people were sacrificed.

In S1, Ep8 Boris reveals to Lane that he can’t stand being in his family estate (where the squad was accommodated), because he considers it a huge crypt. According to him, he wasn’t even a year old when his whole family got infected and died there. The only thing that saved him from the same fate was staying at the hunting estate with Lyuba, family's housekeeper. On the same day that the others fell ill, his grandfather was on a hunting trip from which he has never returned.

Boris is very courteous, polite, and pleasant. He appears to despise the things his grandfather did and seems willing to help the squad with whatever is needed. For Lane, he can be a little bitter, but at the same time, too sweet. She views him as a prince straight out of a fairy tale, perfect in every way. Yet, she also believes that he is a very lonely person, which is the reason why he seems to understand her so well.

In S1 finale you find out that, although Boris pretended that he was not involved in his grandfather's deeds, he actually continued conducting the rituals with the help of the monastery at Rotkov. He claims that the rituals give him something he can’t get anywhere else. He despised his grandfather and his search for the unknown, but Boris grew up and his soul felt empty. Everything has lost its meaning for him and the rituals would stir up something that made him feel alive.

He later realized how stupid it all was and tried to run away to escape from it. So, he left the city and thus, the sacrifices stopped. However, after the rift appeared, Boris had a guilty conscience and believed that this was his fault: that the demons were angry because the rituals stopped. So, he returned to Rotkov to carry on his grandfather's "mission".

When he returned, Rotkov was frozen in time, and he hated its immutability. It caged him and drove him crazy. And the indifference of all the locals made him feel even worse. Sometimes he wished someone would stop him, but they were all too resigned and allowed the sacrifices to happen.

Boris recognized Lane as someone who could understand him. He thinks she is just like him, someone who is pretending, who doesn’t feel anything, who is faking it. He ended up approaching her believing that in the end she would side with him, which doesn't happen.

He wants the Book of the Apocalypse to get the last symbol that is missing to complete the ritual to summon the Devil. He realizes there is no turning back and believes that if he finally finishes the ritual, carry out the way his grandfather wanted, then all this will end.

Boris and the novices purposely infected themselves with the blood of demon spawn as part of the final ritual. But after the squad stopped them, the hall becomes a battle scene. During the battle, Boris's life comes to an end. But the way this happens will differ depending on Lane's relationship with him and other player choices during the story (see possible endings content). In the end, Boris just wanted to feel something and he succeeded.

But this is not the end of Boris for the players who kiss him in S1, Ep10. If you do that, you will think and dream about him throughout Season 2. Boris isn’t just in Lane’s head, but for some reason he only sees and hears here there. The player has the option to end or continue the meetings in Lane's mind in S2, Ep9.

Possible endings

⚠️SPOILER ALERT⚠️

In S1, Ep10 Boris dies anyway, but in four different ways depending on your choices throughout the story.

  • If you have a good relationship with Boris: He gives Lane a knife and asks her to kill him while he's still human. And you are able to choose between three or two of the options below:
    • Do what he asks and kill him;
    • Unable to do what he asks, so Boris ends up killing himself;
    • Kiss Boris and then kill him (Note: You only see this option if you chose men or men and women on your gender preference settings, unlocked the path of compassion, and have a close enough relationship with Boris. Look at the romance path to find out how to achieve this. This choice will make the MC talk to Boris in her mind, but you can stop this in S2, Ep9.)
  • If you don't have a good relationship with Boris: He tries to kill Lane, but Dmitry saves her by shooting and killing Boris.
