Bonne de Pons d'Heudicourt is a love interest in the book Vying for Versailles.
About Bonne[]
Bonne is part of Queen Anne's retinue at the Sun Court. She meets Renée at the beginning of the story when she is about to join the Sun Court.
Bonne is the daughter of a strict man, Pons de Pons, who ignored her when she was a child. Being disappointed that she wasn't a boy who he could hang his fortunes on, he even learned to hate her when she started to become a woman. Because of this treatment, Bonne has always been defiant toward him. As a child she was close to her mother but lost her while Bonne was still young. Her mother's love of plants and botany was where Bonne developed her own love of flowers and perfumes. She originally wanted to create a perfume that reminded her of her mother's scent - that's how she got into it.[1]
After losing a lover to an illness, Bonne was still grieving when she met Louis XIV 5 years ago and became involved with him. Later, she explains to Renée that she was curious but not in love, and that she wanted to provoke her father and to make him regret having her. Their relationship didn’t last long but her father considered her reputation ruined, which is why she is supposed to marry the cruel and unkind Master of the Hunt. Bonne doesn't like being at court and feels trapped there, only staying because of her father.
Bonne describes herself as reckless and says she falls in love without thinking about it. She's generous, flippant and wears her heart on her sleeve. Despite being involved in politics, Bonne doesn’t want to play games and desires her own freedom above everything else.
At the end of Season 1, the player has the option to forcefully convince the Master of the Hunt to drop his suit and leave Bonne alone. No matter if that choice is taken or not, he leaves which makes Bonne pretty happy. Unfortunately, her father starts to pressure her even more to find a new suitor after that. Bonne hopes that Queen Anne will protect her from this unwanted fate, but worries about her Lady's declining health. In Season 2, Bonne's father comes to Versailles and says he's tired of supporting a woman in style at court destined to become a spinster. In his opinion, she has to marry one of her suitors or return to the country to take care of him in his old age. Because the Dowager Queen is too till to protect Bonne at the time, Renée talks to the King and explains that Bonne attends to his mother all day, making sure she's taken care of and comfortable. King Louis promises to help and offers Pons de Pons money in exchange for Bonne's stay at the court.
After Queen Anne's death, Bonne tells her lover Renée that she has an aunt in the south who invited her to stay with her at her cottage. She feels like being there would suit her better than the court or returning to her father's house. Since her aunt said Bonne could bring a friend, she asks Renée to come with her, assuring her that they would be free to live their lives and only help with managing the household staff. Renée is unsure because of her tasks and connections at court, and because she always wanted to be in the thick of things, which saddens Bonne greatly. Despite these differences, they continue to spend time together and Bonne shows Renée her work room in a gardening shed, where she stores plants and works on her own oils and perfumes. As time goes by, Renée notices that Bonne smiles more and that simple delights bring her a lot of happiness. Renée also starts to think about a possible future together, wondering if a modest life with Bonne would be more healthy than her spywork and if she would be able to make a living as a craftsman rather than a noble. When Pons de Pons shows up again and tried to take Bonne away, Renée defends her, which prompts Pons to call Bonne ungrateful and saying that he'll give her up. Renée consoles a sad Bonne and promises that after she finishes the latest investigation, she’ll tell the king she’s done with spying for him.

Possible endings[]
- If the couple stays together, Renée asks the King to retire from being his spy so she can be free and live with Bonne. After Louis agrees reluctantly, Renée takes Bonne to meet her father where they explain their relationship and get his blessing. Depending on Renée's social status, they either move to the Chateau Marley or to the countryside where they take care of Bonne’s maiden aunt. The couple also gets to choose if they want to adopt a daughter or not. Bonne devotes her time to her perfumery business while Renée spends time doing what gives her joy.
- If Renée and Bonne are not together and Renée doesn't romance King Louis, Bonne eventually leaves the court and starts her perfume business in the countryside.
- If Renée and Bonne are not together and Renée romances the King, Bonne grows bitter and ends up trying to poison Louis. After being caught by Renée and Alexandre, Bonne confesses that she feels like Louis ruined her and no one will ever marry her because her reputation is destroyed beyond repair. Furthermore, she says that her father hates her and she cared for Louis’s dying mother without receiving any thanks. Renée then gets to decide Bonne's fate and can either send her to exile or advocate for her execution.
