"Be with me in every world. And I’ll remember the real me."
Bert is a love interest in the book Arcanum.
About Bert
Bert is a vivacious and full of life man, a carefree person who likes to live in the moment and make the most of it. He has an easygoing spirit, a cheerful voice, and playful eyes. He expresses confidence, strength, and love. He takes the spotlight whenever he talks, and he is well-aware of the effect he has on people. Bert is also a cocky man with a sharp tongue. For some, he is a dark horse or even so a sly fox carrying his own agenda.
His real-world identity is only revealed at the beginning of Season 3. At first, Bert is introduced into the story as an artist of Totspel, where he lives in an annex near the Hotel Valle Deliria and is responsible for painting the portraits of its guests. In his annex there are several pictures of deserted landscapes because he is trying to escape from the monotonous work with portraits.
In this alternate reality of Season 1, he went to the art school with Liam Salisbury, who says that Bert was the most talented there. They appear to be good friends, but Liam seems to be jealous of Bert because of his talent and for his relationship with Lilith (main character’s name in the parallel realities).
The artist’s whole life in Totspel has been devoted to working - when he is painting, the whole world ceases to exist. Painting is the only thing on his mind, other than Lilith. They were very close in the past; she loved to share everything that happened to her with him. And because of that, Bert refuses to believe that Lilith has lost her memory. He thinks she got tired of him and is making up other games with Robert Steltz's help. He takes offense at this and tries unsuccessfully to stay away from her.
Bert has been suffering from migraines for a couple years in this reality. At first it seems that Mary Brown is helping him by providing candles to make him feel better after lighting them up. Later you discover that, actually, the candles were used to manipulate him, suppressing his will. This leaves him devastated, feeling like a puppet at the end of Season 1.
In Season 2 we enter a new world where all the characters play other roles. Valle Deliria is a beautiful country ruled by dryads. In this reality, Bert is the Queen’s brother and the uncle of Prince Liam. He soon shows interest in Lilith - the illegitimate daughter of the King and the heir to the throne, since Valle Deliria is ruled only by women - and volunteer to show her the palace and the history of the continent.
If you have a close relationship with Bert, he starts to feel a sense of déjà vu with Lilith and because of that he has headache for the first time in this reality. Despite his flirtatious ways, he shows a lot of affection and concern for the main character, to the point of saying he loves her at the end of the Season 2.
Season 3 takes place in the Kingdom of Shadows, that consists of many villages and the capital. In this reality, Bert is a nomad, and apparently steals for a living. The women continue to be enchanted by his charm, but if he is your love interest, he shows to have eyes only for Lilith, even though he doesn't understand why. Liam, Mary, and Rob are suspicious of him and they think that Lilith is making a rash decision by inviting Bert to accompany them on their journey. Claiming to have his own path, Bert declines the invitation but eventually joins them later.
In a diamond scene of Season 3, Episode 3 you can learn that Bert is a doctor in the real world who succeeded at everything quickly and without even trying; he could get away with anything - and because of that he thought so highly of himself. Until one day, things didn't go as expected, and you get to see a flashback of a case that traumatized him: with Miranda, the girl in the picture who keeps haunting him in all realities.
Despite his overconfidence, during surgery he was unable to save Miranda, and after four agonizing hours she ended up dying on the operating table. The investigation didn’t reveal a medical error, but Bert still felt guilty. He didn’t show up for work for several months, and kept reminiscing about what had happened, trying to find where he went wrong. Bert couldn’t understand where he had made a mistake, but for some reason, he was certain he was the one at fault.
In Season 3, Episode 9 you discover that Bert was manipulated by the Tarot Reader to prevent Lilith from getting to him in the Kingdom of Shadows. The Tarot Reader promised Bert that he would free his sister - that he didn't even know existed apparently because his memory had been erased - if he fulfilled the deal. Bert says he was hoping that Lilith wouldn't get to the Tarot Reader because he was afraid he would kill her. If you bought the diamond choice mentioned above to discover Miranda's true story, Lilith manages to convince Bert that the girl is dead and that the Tarot Reader tricked him, and also manages to make Bert stay alive in this reality.
At the end of this same episode, the main character goes to an alternate real world where she meets Bert. If you choose to buy the diamond scene to talk to him, he reveals that they ran into each other once at the hospital. On that occasion, she was rude to him, and then, looking into his eyes, she got shy – which Bert thought it was cute.
In a diamond scene from Season 3, Episode 10 Selena/Lilith has a flashback to Totspel when Bert gives her a painting that resembles the portrait from the living room of the main character in the real world, which she doesn’t remember who painted it for her.

Relationships
- Selena/Lilith (MC): In Totspel, she was his first. With her, Bert forgot about work and remembered that there are other pleasures in the world. In Valle Deliria, Bert soon takes an interest in the main character; and depending on the relationship they had in Season 1, he might feel like he knows her from other lifetimes. In the Kingdom of Shadows, despite his flirtatious ways, he proves to be a devoted lover if Selena/Lilith has a close relationship with him.
- Liam Salisbury: In Totspel, Bert and Liam went to the art school together. For Bert, Liam is a good friend, but he admits that doesn't know what Liam thinks about their relationship. In Valle Deliria, Bert is Liam's uncle and they seem to get along well. In the Kingdom of Shadows, Liam is suspicious of him and thinks that Selena/Lilith is taking a rash decision by asking Bert to accompany them on their journey.
- Mary Brown: In Totspel, at first it seems that she helps him with his migraine, offering candles that momentarily alleviate his headache. But at the end of Season 1 you discover that the candles were actually used to manipulate him. Mary is also shown to be jealous of his relationship with the main character. In Valle Deliria, she is Bert's sister's advisor, so they trust each other. In the Kingdom of Shadows, they meet in a tavern and Mary is sceptical of him due to him being a thief.
- Robert Steltz: In Totspel, Bert paints Rob's portrait, and they don't seem to get along very well. In Valle Deliria, they don't get along well at first either, but after Bert saved Rob from a Savage, they start to respect each other. In the Kingdom of Shadows, they are strangers to each other and Rob get furious when Selena/Lilith invites Bert to join them.
- Josephine: In Totspel, she speaks proudly about the portraits Bert paints. In Valle Deliria, she is the nanny of his nephew Liam. In the Kingdom of Shadows, she is the leader of Juvenis, a village that was on his way.
- Tonya: She is a pub waitress (both in Totspel and Valle Deliria). In Totspel, she and Bert had an affair in the past and she still seems to be interested in him. In Valle Deliria, she doesn't even know who Bert is. In the Kingdom of Shadows, if Bert isn't your love interest, it is mentioned that he is flirting with a waitress (probably Tonya, but she does not appear).
- Queen Margaret: She is his sister in Season 2, and the Queen of Valle Deliria. She doesn't tolerate her brother's pranks. Despite that, he fiercely defends Margaret's ideals for their country.

Trivia
Totspel (Season 1):
- Bert and Lilith have a special place, the estuary bank, that you can visit in a diamond scene in Season 1, Episode 3. It was Lilith who introduced it to him in the past - and now Bert presents it back to her.
- The artist thinks that men waste their potential by running after every skirt; and that a man, like a woman, should commit only to the best. And the best for Bert is Lilith.
- He doesn't have the patience for plays.
- Drawing and sculping had always been easy for him. If he hadn’t seen how hard it was for others, he wouldn’t have realized that it was something special.
- Bert always knew that Lilith didn't love him. But since he was loved by many women, he thought that was enough for both of them. And for the first time, for Lilith, he wanted to give love without expecting anything in return. And he was grateful to her for that.
Valle Deliria (Season 2):
- The dryads give their beloved a flower instead of confessions and promises because flower is nature – life itself. Bert gives flower to Lilith saying he would give her an entire garden if possible. A gift of a flower is a gift given from the heart, meaning that his heart belongs to her.
- Liam and Bert were trained to fight. Boys are always taught that in Valle Deliria, in case of a military coup or something.
- Bert says that he and Lilith met in dreams. But before they met in real life, her face was blurry.
- When dryads face death, they don’t see the killer’s face, but the face of their dearest dryad. Bert sees Lilith’s face.
- Bert has a special place in Valle Deliria: a terrace. If he is your love interest you can visit it in a diamond scene in Season 2, Episode 11. Her mom loved to have breakfast there, but after her death no one else went to the terrace. So Bert goes there from time to time to think, relax, and have some fun.

- Why Juvenis? (Bert says it is just because it was on the way.)
- How long are you staying here? (Bert says he doesn't know yet.)
- If Bert is your love interest, in a diamond scene of Season 3, Episode 5 you discover that:
- He loves to fight, but he loves sewing up wounds even more.
- He likes cheap chowder.
- He doesn’t like when people are too serious, but doesn’t like complete fools either.
- Bert used to get sick a lot as a kid. (Diamond scene - S3, Ep7)

Possible endings
⚠️SPOILER ALERT⚠️
In Season 3, Episode 10 there are six possible endings with Bert if he is your end-game love interest which are directly influenced by your choices throughout the book.
- Path of High Atonement ⛓️: The main character gets the "Nothingness" card and remembers the other realities. She then decides to look for Bert in different hospitals. She was tired almost giving up hope when she finally finds him at the entrance of one of them. He approaches her to see if she needed help. They start talking and flirting, and Selena asks for a kiss.
- Strong relationship: Bert hesitates but allows Selena to kiss him. After they kiss, she gets embarrassed and apologizes. But Bert just smiles and says she looks cute when embarrassed. He feels the connection they shared in the other realities. (CG unlocked)
- Weak relationship: Before Selena can kiss him, Bert recoils from her lips and says they took this too far. So, he goes back to his work, and she goes on with her life - without him, but grateful that he was part of her life even for a short time.
- Path of Low Atonement ⛓️ with enough Major Arcana 🎴 (second chance): If you choose that the main character deserves a second chance, she will be on an endless journey through the worlds, and you see a different scene depending on which path you are on.
- Path of High Priestess 🌙: The main character and Bert escape the castle of Valle Deliria and its responsibilities by horse, only caring about the freedom and adventures waiting for them.
- Path of Emperor 💀: The main character tells Bert that Mary was deceiving him and the two run away together from the hotel Valle Deliria, in Totspel.
- Path of Low Atonement ⛓️ without enough Major Arcana 🎴 (or if you chose death): Depending on your path the main character will react differently to her fate.
- Path of High Priestess 🌙: The main character asks to take one last look at the real world. The Tarot Reader says yes but as a ghost. She sees Bert but cannot speak to him, just watches and be close one last time. When she arrives at the doors of the real other world she doesn't want to leave without Bert, so she stays in front of the doors to wait for him.
- Path of Emperor 💀: The main character kills the Tarot Reader, so she cannot see the real world one last time. But the player sees a scene of Bert in front of his work with the feeling that someone he expected to meet did not show up. When the main character arrives at the doors of the real other world she doesn't want to leave without Bert, so she stays in front of the doors to wait for him.
Note: If Bert is not your end-game love interest, the main character doesn’t even know if he exists in the real world and realizes that their paths might never cross.
