Alexander is the Duke of Clarence and an enthusiastic man of science. According to his sister Rachel, he's often fascinated by the strangeness of the world. His assistant Ellia describes Alexander as eccentric, absent-minded, kind and passionate.
Alexander and his family live in Chesterfield House, a luxurious mansion in London. He spends a lot of time in his own laboratory which he refers to as "the shrine of science". He owns the most powerful telescope in London and perhaps all of England.
His brother Albert, the former Duke of Clarance whom Alexander viewed as the best person in his family, died about ten years ago when Alexander was twenty. Albert used to be close to Ezra Anderson, son of the police commissioner, which made Alexander very jealous. After getting an anonymous note, he found Albert and Ezra at a brothel frequented by queer men, talking about a mysterious agreement. Angry about their secrecy, Alexander confronts him before saying that Albert is dead to him. Three days later, Albert died of supposed lung weakness. On his deathbed, Albert begged their father to give his title to Alexander because he knew his brother always wanted to be like him. Feeling guilty, Alexander claims that Albert must have been poisoned and even finds a poison vial with Ezra's initials, but Ezra denies his involvement.
At the beginning of the story, Alexander meets Agatha at a ball where they witness a mysterious death. Being intrigued by the crime, he decides to help the girl investigate what happened and support her desire to open her own detective agency. Trying to find out how the culprit is able to make ghosts appear, he starts to experience with mirrors and light in his laboratory. After the murder is solved, Alexander offers Agatha and her companion Eve a permanent stay at Chesterfield House. When Queen Victoria's coronet gets stolen, he convinces his grandmother to let Agatha handle the case. During their investigations, Alexander and Agatha get closer and start a relationship.
